Across Europe, even speaking the word "bear" was considered an ill omen that would summon the terrifying creature, thus their name was only spoken as a warning call. One of their more lighthearted activities includes their annual scratching ritual - in early spring they shed layers of their winter coats - in synchronicity with the rising temperatures - by rubbing their bodies on tree stumps. This process not only removes excess fur but also marks the tree with their scent to signify their presence to other bears. Introduced in 2019, the Ginger Jar was a new shape from Herend and lends itself perfectly to creating this textured, layered masterpiece. Peregrine means wanderer, and the Peregrine Falcon is one of the world’s most widespread raptors. When hunting, it is known for spectacular dives with wings closed, called “stoops”, that can begin up to 3,000 feet above its intended target and reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour as it drops towards its prey. Considered an elite predator, immortalizing it in porcelain required an equally dramatic figurine. Power was the guiding mantra for the sculptor’s tool from the bold talons, the jagged rock and the unflinching stare of a highly-efficient hunter. Native to the Arabian Peninsula, between the hilly and mountainous areas of the Negev Desert and the Musandam Peninsula, there are thought to be fewer than 200 Arabian Leopards in the wild. A critically endangered species, Herend master painter Sándor Vida captured faithfully the slightest movement and the color scheme of the animal.
