Across Europe, even speaking the word "bear" was considered an ill omen that would summon the terrifying creature, thus their name was only spoken as a warning call. One of their more lighthearted activities includes their annual scratching ritual - in early spring they shed layers of their winter coats - in synchronicity with the rising temperatures - by rubbing their bodies on tree stumps.
