Herend Macao Square Vase

The Macao pattern debuted at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair where it helped lead the Herend manufactory to win a gold medal. The saturated tones of Macao arise from the enameling process. Enamel painting is a complex process because it is is a balancing act between creating the rich pigmentation and technical constraints because if one layer is applied unevenly, it can prevent the paint from adhering to the piece. Therefore, only seasoned artists, with their skills and knowledge, are entrusted with working with enamel colors. 24k gold accents compliment colorful birds against a rich green background.
