Based on the first marine chronometer made by the clock maker John Harrison (1693-1776), this extraordinary instrument features the “grasshopper escapement” operated by two inter-linked pendulums that compensated for the motion of a ship. Case is solid burr walnut; crystal canopy has goldplated frame. Eight-day fusee movement is solid brass, hand polished and goldplated. Enamel finish dials with Breguet hands. Inside the drawer are a winding key and a paperback copy of Dava Sobel’s “Longitude” about John Harrison’s quest to invent a way to calculate longitude. Handmade in England. 13 ¼”w x 9 ¾”d x 20 ¾”h.
