Beautiful print of an original by the great German naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (2 April 1647 – 13 January 1717). In June of 1699, at the age of 52, Merian departed from Amsterdam, her home of eighteen years, to the Dutch colony of Surinam on the northeastern coast of South America. There, she spent two years observing the indigenous plants and insects, painting them into one of the most significant natural history folios of the 18th century, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. The print (9" x 12") is set into a stunning gold frame.

Measures 22⅝" x 26½".
