Herend Black Dynasty Pitcher with Lizard Handle $8,355
Herend Chinoiserie had no parallel in 19th century porcelain and it is this creative period which gave rise to the shape of this elaborate water pitcher with a stylized Chinese water dragon handle. It would take until the 21st century before it was paired with the elaborate Jiangxi pattern. The result is both an homage on the part of Herend artists to their brothers in the East as well as a bit of a competitive tweak. For while the Jiangxi pattern was inspired by the Far East, it was designed by Herend artists who deliberately endowed it with a significant name. Jiangxi is a province in China that houses the city of Jingdezhen otherwise known as the Capital of Porcelain. It takes 2 painters a combined total of 65 hours to create this masterpiece.

Mottahedeh Dallas Museum Carp $210 - $540
Assorted Pieces
To the Chinese, the carp is a symbol of success and plenty. This stylized goldfish seems to swim toward us, providing a splash of color in the center of ornately painted gold borders. The lively carp with its rose tail, the vigorous twist of its body, the delicate pectoral fins and the endearing wide-eyed innocence of its whiskered head, is a delightful tour-de-force. Perhaps inspired by a Baroque silver or faience shape, this platter was probably made for the Portuguese market. Portuguese sailed the high seas back and forth from China and had developed a taste for brightly painted Chinese designs. The platter was originally reproduced by permission of the Dallas Museum of Art, Wendy Reeves Collection. (China, c. 1750-60)

Herend Asian Garden Ornate $175 - $1,255
Assorted Styles
A pair of cups created in Vienna, Austria in the early 19th century inspired the Asian Garden Orange pattern. At this time, European porcelain motifs were still copies of far-eastern models, but while the characteristic Chinese and Japanese motifs usually carried a symbolic meaning, the makers of their European counterparts used them purely for decorative purposes. This style, known as Chinoise, was widely used in art and design, and the set depicting Oriental characters is a stunning example. The rim of each snow-white piece, the lid knobs and the sprouts are lavishly gilded and the dishes are adorned with various combinations of six Chinese figures, birds, dragons, plants on a gold-speckled background. In the second half of the 19th century, Herend was authorized by Emperor Franz Joseph to use the patterns. Herend artists did not simply adopt these motifs, but reinterpreted and adjusted them to their own painting style, as evidenced by this pattern.
