Native to the Arabian Peninsula, between the hilly and mountainous areas of the Negev Desert and the Musandam Peninsula, there are thought to be fewer than 200 Arabian Leopards in the wild. A critically endangered species, Herend master painter Sándor Vida captured faithfully the slightest movement and the color scheme of the animal. This design was produced by Morris & Co at Merton Abbey, Surrey, in 1883. The intricate design was created by William Morris, with the birds probably being drawn by Philip Webb. It was inspired by a real-life problem one that is familiar to many gardeners. In his garden at Kelmscott Manor, Morris tried to grow strawberries but found that these were always being eaten by greedy thrushes who managed to creep under the netting. Morris allowed them to do so enjoying their efforts to remove the strawberries. Recalling their attempts, he designed this remarkable furnishing textile pattern, taken directly from the natural world. The gentle humor in this pattern helped to make it one of Morriss's most successful creations.

This very popular mirror design dates to about 1640. In a manner typical of the Baroque Period, this looking glass has a very elaborate frame and a small mirror. The mercury mirrored glass was very costly, rare and made only in small plates exclusively in Venice. In 1640 the mirror plate would have been considerably more expensive than the luxuriant frame. In this Italian piece sprays of fully sculpted acanthus leaves surround an inner border of laurel leaves and berries. The finish of hand laid gold leaf is burnished to reveal the bole red undercoats through an antique patina. The mirror has a beveled edge. Made in America.
